Black History Fact of the Day: Medgar Evers (1925 –1963) was an African American civil rights activist from Mississippi involved in efforts to overturn segregation at the University of Mississippi. He became active in the Civil Rights Movement after returning from overseas service in World War II. Evers was assassinated in 1963. As a veteran, Evers was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. His murder and the resulting trials inspired civil rights protests, as well as numerous works of art, music, and film.
COSMOS is a four-week residential program for talented and motivated students completing grades 8-12. Students work side-by-side with outstanding university researchers and faculty exploring advanced topics beyond the typical high school curricululm in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Imperial County Farm Bureau Applications for this scholarship program are now being accepted. Eligibility: · Imperial Valley high school seniors · Preparing for an agriculture-related career · Plan to attend college full-time this fall · Have a minimum GPA of 2.5. This application also enters the student for the Matthew LaBrucherie Memorial Scholarship and the Vern Highley Memorial Scholarship. Last year eleven students were awarded! Pick up an application in Counseling. Due in Counseling on Monday, April 30, 2012 I.V.R.O.P. Community Foundation is offering scholarships of $250 to $1000. Criteria: Must be a resident of Imperial Valley, enroll in a technical school, community college or a university as an entering freshman, must apply in only one of the four types of scholarships: 1.) Scholastic Achievement Awards: 3.25 GPA and 23 on ACT or 1,100 on SAT. 2.) Exemplary Community Involvement Awards: involved in a community based improvement project and have 2.0 GPA. 3.) IVROP Student Awards: for students that have completed at least one IVROP year-long course and have a 2.0 minimum GPA 4.) General Awards: 2.0 GPA, leadership, motivation and integrity. Pick up an application in Counseling. Deadline to turn the completed application to IVROP Office is Friday, April 16, 2012. Italian Catholic Federation offers $400.00 scholarships to Catholic graduating seniors of Italian descent. Applicants will be judged on GPA and class rank, financial need, leadership role, faculty recommendation and character reference. Eligibility criteria: · Must be Baptized Roman Catholic and of Italian descent (parents must be members of the Italian Catholic Federation) · Cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 · Letter of recommendation from a school official · Personal letter explaining Italian origin Pick up an application in the counseling office. Deadline to turn it in to Counseling is Friday, March 9, 2011. Cesar E. Chavez High School Essay Contest open to students 9th – 12th. UCSD Early Academic Outreach (EAOP) and the San Diego Cesar E. Chavez Commemorative Committee (SDCECC) are proud to offer awards from $100 to $1,000. Whether you are from a farm worker family or not, write a two-page essay answering the questions and ideas presented by the committee. · High school students grades 9 through 12 · Two-page, typed essay answering the prompt Pick up an application in the Counseling office. Turn in to the Counseling office by Thursday, March 1, 2011.
Robert W. Rosas Jr. Memorial Scholarship This scholarship honors a Central Union High School Alumnus. 2 scholarships will be awarded at $1,000 each. Eligibility criteria: · Be a Central Union High School senior · Be involved in a high school sport or extracurricular activity · Provide one letter of recommendation · Certify an overall GPA of 2.5 or better · Provide one photograph suitable for display on publications · Include an essay answering the questions on the application * The second scholarship will be awarded to an applicant who is a child of federal, state, local law enforcement, or Military Veteran in addition to the above criteria. Deadline is March 15, 2012. Turn in completed applications by March 9th to Counseling for mailing. Rewarding College Dreams Scholarship Eligibility Criteria · Seniors going to a Community College or a University next year. · Received services from Cal-SOAP peer advisers · Minimum 2.0 GPA for Comm. College, 2.8 GPA for the University award · 500 word essay on one of the provided prompts · Complete the FAFSA · Official transcript · Complete recommendation form. Pick up an application in the Counseling office or from Cal SOAP coaches in the Library. Due March 15, 2011. Bring in to the counseling office for postmarking by 3:00. El Centro Rotary Club College/University Scholarship Eligibility criteria: · High school senior · Accepted to a four-year college, plan to enroll full-time · Two-page essay · Two letters of recommendation Submit a completed application, your letter of acceptance from the university and a transcript. Pick up an application in Counseling. Deadline to turn in to Counseling is April 13, 2012 in the morning. Imperial County Teachers Uniserv Scholarship Eligibility criteria: · 3.0 or higher GPA · Two letters of recommendation · 250 – 500 word essay · Graduating senior with permanent residence within Imperial County. · Preference is given to dependents of current CTA members. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. Pick up an application in Counseling. Due April 20, 2012 by 3:00 in Counseling.
Music Scholarship Auditions for Mount St. Mary’s College, Los Angeles The music department at Mount St. Mary’s offers a scholarship for music majors planning on attending their campus for a Bachelor degree. Students must apply for admission to the university. Deadline for fall semester admission is February 15. Music department auditions for voice, piano, guitar, and orchestral instruments are scheduled for January through March. Seniors, did you apply to UC Berkeley? The Achievement Award Program (TAAP) at UC Berkeley Sponsored by the Cal Alumni Association and friends, it awards incoming Cal students with up to $6,500 per year and a laptop. May be renewed for up to 8 semesters. Eligibility criteria: · Minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA · Gross family income of $86,000 or less · California resident as defined by the AB 540 guidelines · Submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) to UC Berkeley Application is available online at “alumni.berkeley.edu/scholarships” in December. Navy ROTC Scholarships The Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps is a total scholarship program of $180,000 covering all college expenses plus a monthly spending allowance. You may get a degree in the subject you choose from a top college or university of your choice. You will need to apply and be accepted to that university. NROTC also offers a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. You will be commissioned as a naval officer upon graduation and be guaranteed employment for at least 4 years. There is potential for a post-graduate degree at no expense. Eligibility criteria: SAT minimum scores of 530 Critical Reading & 520 Math or ACT scores of 22 English & 21 Math Open to high school seniors through college sophomores NOTE: Applicants must either meet the SAT/ACT minimum scores or be in the top 10% of their high school class with non-qualifying scores.
